Trek Information

  • 12 March 2019
The origins of high mountain trekking are rooted in the origin of man's exploration of extreme environments. It is a challenge that we still enjoy and the high mountain environments of glaciers and peaks over 3000m remain pure mountain adventure. Away from the crowds and traffic, trekking provides the opportunity to get a unique high mountain experience, get closer to the species that inhabit these special environments and find the time to appreciate a simpler style and pace of life.

Whether you are planning your first big trip or are a seasoned traveller we can provide the security of knowing your safety, well being and trip enjoyment is our highest priority! High level trekking in the Alps and Great Ranges can bring it's own dangers and if you are not aware of what they might be or are stepping up from lower level hiking or trekking then one of our trips could be just what you're looking for.

Only fully qualified IFMGA/UIAGM registered mountain guides can take you onto glaciated terrain. Other qualifications are not relevant to this particular type of terrain. On our trips you will learn how to travel safely in this environment as well as enjoying the scenery and the trekking.

Altitude sickness is also a concern on high altitude treks and a mountain guide will always have your health as a major concern. Our treks are specifically planned to give you the best opportunity to acclimatise and achieve a peak and our Kilimanjaro trek, for example, includes an extra day over those offered by other operators as this is closely linked to a trek's chance of success.

If you can't find what you are looking for in our scheduled trekking trips then we are always very happy to arrange bespoke holidays for you. That way you can tailor your holiday to fit around your own time restrictions, goals or group size.

Glacier trekking is the ideal adventure holiday for people who are looking for something that bit different. Whilst it is the perfect step up for regular walkers, no previous experience is necessary.

Alpine trails are not all equal. Alpine trails incorporating trekking over a glacier offer an opportunity to explore a unique environment and achieve something over and above the norm. Completing a glacier trail is a real achievement! Take the Haute Route trail in the summer, for example: you can complete the Haute Route trail in the normal way on lower level paths or you can gain altitude with our guides and experience the trail as a stunning wilderness, far from the madding crowds.

Glacier trails cross terrain that you simply won't experience anywhere else. Often you will you get the chance to get up close to stunning ice formations and crevasses within glaciated environments, and the mountain views are quite unlike anything you'll see elsewhere! Of course, getting to and from the glaciers includes travelling through more traditional alpine environments too, so the trips offer a true all-round experience.

Mountain guides are the only mountain professionals able to guide you on an alpine trek crossing a glacier. Mountain Tracks runs guided glacier trekking adventure holidays in the Alps from several locations, each offering a different experience.

In addition to experiencing the glaciers up close and personal, you will also enjoy mountain accommodation in some breathtaking situations, camaraderie with group members and an opportunity to really appreciate walking at altitude.

Avalanche Training

  • 12 March 2019

Foundation & Advanced level courses - ideal training courses for recreational skiers and snowboarders.

Adventurous activities in the mountains have their dangers. However the risk can be significantly minimised by making decisions regarding which terrain is safe and enjoyable versus unstable and dangerous. This is why an Avalanche Awareness course could be the best investment you make before venturing off-piste. At Mountain Tracks we are experts in mountain travel and safety and our courses will teach you how to use available equipment, including a transceiver or peeps, probe and snow shovel, effectively and how you can test snow conditions to assess risk levels before venturing onto snow laden slopes.

All scheduled courses run in Chamonix. We can run bespoke courses for private groups in other resorts.

Climb Information

  • 12 March 2019
Climbing - on rock, ice or on mountains - is an activity closely tied to pushing the limits of human ingenuity and achievement.

Alpine mountaineering is steeped in history and intrigue, from the first ascent of Mont Blanc to the Golden Age of alpinism following the formation of the Alpine Club in London, 1857. Our trips will take you to the top of the Alps most prestigious and noteworthy peaks including the Matterhorn and the Eiger. There is a route for every ability and you don't need previous climbing experience to climb, for example, Mont Blanc, amongst others. For the more experienced we have a number of scheduled trips or we can organise a personalised trip to achieve particular routes. Once you've decided on your goal we're here to help put it into action!

Our rock climbing trips are less about acclimatisation and summits and are more laid back, going at the pace you want to go at and at the grade you want to climb. You might be looking to push your climbing grade or want a more active holiday whilst your partner wants to relax with a book. Rock climbing offers a happy solution to all, being based in a suitable holiday destination and and each day is flexible to fit around your needs.

Ice climbing is fast growing in popularity, mainly because it offers the flexibility of a rock climbing holiday but in winter! Based in ever-popular Chamonix, which is also a great destination for non-climbing partners, our ice-climbing courses can be tailored to suit all abilities and aspirations. Being Chamonix based means that there is a vast playground of routes at all levels to aim for and your guide will be perfectly placed to assess your skill level and ensure you have a holiday to never forget.

But if you still haven't found exactly what you're looking for we can cater for individual itineraries and goals. A lot of clients contact us for private guiding as they have the time and want to use our expertise in organising a trip, working around the perils of weather conditions and getting into the mountains to ensure a successful holiday. Simply let us know what it is you want to achieve and whether it's a specific route to the top of a classic peak such as the Matterhorn or you simply want to make the most out of a week in the Alps we are here to help.

Ice Climbing

  • 12 March 2019

If you've never climbed ice you've never experienced the transitory and surreal world that comes into existence once a year.

Unlike rock climbing, ice climbing accesses unique structures that are never exactly the same twice, each forming in a way that is dependent on the prevailing weather conditions and water running off the mountains.

If you want to experience this amazing world of ice, at Mountain Tracks we can help - whether this is your first taste of winter climbing or an opportunity to push your grade to new heights.

The Alps: a rich and varied playground for the enthusiastic mountaineer! We have a scheduled trip led by our qualified mountain guides to meet all levels of mountaineering ability from our 'Best of Chamonix' taster weekends right through to technical ascents of classic Alpine North Faces. Whatever your personal goal, our experienced IFMGA mountain guides are here to make your trip one to remember!

If you are looking for a guided mountaineering course our Alpine Skills course could be the ideal starting point; for those new to alpine mountaineering or who want to build on existing experience our mountaineering courses will provide a new mountain experience each day and, with it, an array of new and interesting techniques. These are very much 'learn as a you climb' mountain-based courses so the beginning of the course also involves training in acclimatisation, in preparation for the climb to the top of a 4000m alpine mountain.

Via Ferrata

  • 12 March 2019
A via ferrata (Italian for 'iron road') is a mountain route equipped with fixed cables, stemples, ladders and bridges and which are accessible to people with a wide range of climbing abilities. Whilst the easiest routes are relatively straightforward, more challenging routes are best climbed with a guide to avoid mistakes in handling the safety gear. The confidence of knowing the safety issue is taken care of leaves you to enjoy the stunning scenery and high level walkways.

A head for heights is an absolute must as some stretches of via ferrata can be very exposed, but with a guide these are conquered in perfect safety. If you've ever considered or enjoyed scrambling over rocks or tackling an adventure course via ferrata could be the perfect holiday activity for you! In the same way an adventure course has both a physical and mental component a via ferrata will be as much a test of your adaptability - it's both fun and exhilarating!
