I’ve been using the Ortovox 3L Guardian Shell Jacket and Deep Shell Bib Pants since 2024, and after two busy winters, it’s safe to say this is the best kit I’ve ever owned.

First Thoughts

The moment I unboxed the set, I could tell it was something special. The design is sharp, the colours look great in the snow, and everything feels premium. After two full seasons of regular use – both in the UK and the mountains – the gear is still in fantastic condition. The only small sign of wear is on the jacket collar where my beard’s been rubbing, but other than that? Still going strong.

The bib trousers, especially, blew me away. They're packed with useful features (great pockets, smart zips, snow gaiters, and more), and honestly, they’re just a pleasure to wear.

We all know hardshells aren’t known for being super breathable, but this one does a better job than any I’ve owned before. It kept moisture under control, even on sweaty climbs. And when it comes to staying dry? Spot on. From heavy rain in the UK to deep snow days abroad, I’ve had zero issues.

I was a little surprised the jacket didn’t have front pockets – but with a rucksack on, I wouldn’t be able to use them anyway. Smart design choices all round.

Built to Last

Despite two intense seasons – hugging the occasional tree, scraping against rocks, daily use in the UK, flights, tours, and travel – the gear has held up incredibly well. It’s rugged, reliable, and looks almost as good as new.

Easy to Move In

No restriction, no stiffness. Whether I was skinning uphill, bootpacking, or flying down an open face, the gear moved with me. It’s that kind of kit that disappears when you’re wearing it – you just focus on the ride.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely. It’s not the cheapest option on the market, but if you want something comfortable, durable, lightweight, and stylish, this kit ticks every box. I’ll easily get another few seasons out of it, and it’s already proved its value.
