Avalanche Airbag Review 2013

Avalanche Airbag Review 2013

Following my popular articles last season on avalanche airbag systems and avalanche-related risk, this article gives you a useful rundown of what’s on the market in 2013. Avalanche airbag systems are becoming a common sight on our off-piste courses. Just skiing around Chamonix this winter it's noticeable how many people have one strapped to there back with a peaked helmet, mirrored goggles, back protector and fat skis… and looking a little like they’re heading for a combat zone. Maybe I'm not 'new school' enough??

Happy Christmas from Mountain Tracks!

Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas to all from Mountain Tracks! We hope you have a wonderful Christmas break, and look forward to seeing you on the slopes this winter!

After all the great snow in early and mid-December we've had some warmer days lately here in Chamonix. Temperatures are expected to decrease and snow is likely to fall on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, further improving snow conditions for Christmas skiers and snowboarders!

Heli-Skiing Explained

Heli Skiing with Mountain Tracks

The ski and snowboard world is divided into two: those who have heli-skied… and those who have not! Those who have taunt those who have not with tales of big mountain terrain and endless powder. Those who have not predictably tremble with just a little fear (mostly of the unknown). A third group exist: these are the snowcat skiers (some of whom are wannabe heli-skiers!).

Winter 2012/13: Hottest Off-Piste Skis Reviewed

It seems like it was just the other day I was waxing my skis for storage… and already the new Mountain Tracks touring and off-piste programme for Winter 2012/13 is upon us! As the resident 'techno geek' I'm rounding up the latest developments for the winter season.

Zinal: A Swiss Off-Piste Gem

Zinal - Skier's Paradise in Valais - Mountain Tracks

Nick Parks has long been singing (out of tune!) the virtues of skiing Val d'Anniviers in the Swiss canton of Valais. Now, if further proof were needed, he and his wife Niki have chosen this Swiss valley - specifically Zinal - as their base for the 2012/13 season. Nick has been visiting this off-piste gem of the Valais every season since starting Mountain Tracks in 2000. But with so many great places to live, why choose Zinal?

Ski Kashmir - Gulmarg 2012

Ski Kashmir - Gulmarg 2012 with Mountain Tracks

The skiing in Gulmarg (in India's Kashmir region) was superb this year. Large and regular snowfalls, coupled with persistent cold temperatures meant that this powder legend was alive and well. Mountain Tracks ran 5 weeks' worth of trips to Gulmarg this year. The first weeks were hosted by Mountain Tracks founder Nick Parks, the middle weeks were guided by Olly Allen and Miles Bright and the final two weeks were ran by myself.

Latest Weather and Snow Report

A winter of perfect snow

Well it’s been an interesting few weeks since my last report, we have gone from the sunny weather of mid January to a snowfall of over 1m in less than 12hrs! Then days of a steady, continuous snowfall giving the most amazing skiing in Alaskan style conditions to the baltically cold weather of this week.

The 5 Red Flags of Avalanche Danger

The 5 Red Flags of Avalanche Danger

Mother nature provides us with 5 warning signs of high avalanche risk. All backcountry skiers should be on the look out for the presence of one or more of these signs. The more flags that are present, the higher the risk of an avalanche. The presence of these dangers doesn’t necessarily mean that off piste skiing is cancelled for the day, but it will mean that your ski routes will need to be planned accordingly, with the risk firmly in mind.
