Fitness for your Trekking Trip

Mountain Tracks -Fitness for Trekking

To enjoy your holiday to its best get yourself in good physical shape for the activity you are going to undertake. For all our trekking holidays you tend to move at a steady pace but for a long period of time, days in the mountains can be anything from 5-10hrs or more in length. Stamina and endurance are key factors to work on within your fitness training.

An Introduction to Via Ferrata

Introduction to Via Ferrata with Mountain Tracks

Via Ferrate means literally ‘Ways of Iron’. The ‘iron’ in question are ladders that are a legacy from the conflict in WW1 when troops battled for supremacy in the high mountains. The ladders and cableways are fastened to the vertical faces and high ridges and these days, under the guidance of Mountain Guides, they allow walkers and climbers to safely ascend mountains normally only accessible by experienced mountaineers.

Originally a feature of the high granite spires and pinnacles of the Italian Dolomites, the construction of new Via Ferrate has spread across the Alps.

Mont Blanc: The Training, by Dan Aspel

Mont Blanc: the training by Dan Aspel

Last June I booked onto Mountain Tracks/KE Adventure’s “Mont Blanc Ascent” trip. This April myself and the rest of the team at Trail magazine will be publishing a two-part feature on the experience. So, as part of a much-owed thank-you to Mountain Tracks and KE for their tireless support, here’s a sneak preview of what to expect in the first part…

Avalanche Airbag Review 2013

Avalanche Airbag Review 2013

Following my popular articles last season on avalanche airbag systems and avalanche-related risk, this article gives you a useful rundown of what’s on the market in 2013. Avalanche airbag systems are becoming a common sight on our off-piste courses. Just skiing around Chamonix this winter it's noticeable how many people have one strapped to there back with a peaked helmet, mirrored goggles, back protector and fat skis… and looking a little like they’re heading for a combat zone. Maybe I'm not 'new school' enough??

The Seventh Continent - Part 1: The Draw of Antarctica

Skiing in Antarctica

“Antoine, you're the skipper, you outline the boat’s safety features to our guests.” Hesitantly, the young man accompanied by his even younger looking girlfriend, Julie, briefed us in broken English on the emergency procedures needed to sail across the infamous Drake Passage. We all paid close attention. Though skiing was the main focus of our Antarctica adventure we first had to get there - and it's by sail or not at all.

Happy Christmas from Mountain Tracks!

Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas to all from Mountain Tracks! We hope you have a wonderful Christmas break, and look forward to seeing you on the slopes this winter!

After all the great snow in early and mid-December we've had some warmer days lately here in Chamonix. Temperatures are expected to decrease and snow is likely to fall on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, further improving snow conditions for Christmas skiers and snowboarders!

Remembering Rémy Lécluse (1964-2012)

Remembering Rémy Lécluse (1964-2012)

Rémy Lécluse (1964 - 2012)
At 4am on Sunday 23 September 2012 an enormous avalanche swept through camp 3 on Mount Manaslu in the Himalayas. Tragically it killed 9 mountaineers, among them the French guide and extreme skier Rémy Lécluse. Rémy was well known for his extraordinary exploits on skis and his guiding to many around the world.

Ice axe technique

Let me first get one thing straight: I boulder. I don’t put on a harness, or a helmet or even carry a rucksack. I have my pad, shoes and a down jacket (and an endless supply of chocolate). That’s me set. So, when the opportunity arose to go to Chamonix with Berghaus to do some beginner winter mountaineering, to say I was slightly concerned is putting it mildly.  However, I thought why not and got on my way (with 3 insulated jackets and plenty of thermals).
