Latest weather and snow report

Powder Snow

We have been blessed with a week of beautiful sunny weather in the Alps since last Monday. The snow conditions are fantastic, something we already knew at Mountain Tracks but seems to have only just crept out in the UK press recently. Peter Hardy confirmed this with his recent article in the Telegraph (click HERE to read).

A Snowy New Year

Lots of Fresh Snow

After all the great snow in mid December we were blessed with perfect weather for Christmas, blue skis, sunshine and great skiing. Our guests in Zinal just before Christmas had some epic ski conditions, almost too much snow dare I say it, and enjoyed a fantastic few days skiing with Olly Allen and Dave Meyer.

Just a few of their great comments were:

“I had a fantastic trip !! without blowing to much smoke, as far as I’m concerned, you guys have got it exactly spot on. Olly was the consummate professional, as well as being great company.”

The 5 Red Flags of Avalanche Danger

Mother nature provides us with 5 warning signs of high avalanche risk. All backcountry skiers should be on the look out for the presence of one or more of these signs. The more flags that are present, the higher the risk of an avalanche. The presence of these dangers doesn’t necessarily mean that off piste skiing is cancelled for the day, but it will mean that your ski routes will need to be planned accordingly, with the risk firmly in mind.

Steep Skiing: An Introductory Guide

steep skiing

Steep skiing is certainly an exciting passion and when done well it’s very satisfying. The ability to ski steeps opens up new and airy locations and the ever present knowledge that one shouldn't fall means that the adrenaline flows freely.
Off-piste skiers need to have a good portfolio of techniques, so they can adapt to ever changing snow conditions and slope angles. To ski steep slopes in control requires a different set of skills to gentler gradients, these are very different to modern piste skiing techniques.
